We arrived in Nairobi, Kenya at 9:30 p.m. (Kenya time, which is 8 hours ahead of Toronto). We had a 3 hour lay over in Amsterdam and then a 8 1/2 hour flight to Nairobi. We were met at the airport by Aaron, Erica and their son, Tristan. We drove to Acacia Camp that night, about an hour's drive from Nairobi. It was only an hours drive because there is not much traffic at night. It took Aaron and Erica approximately 5 hours to drive home, the same distance, on Saturday afternoon. Traffic in Nairobi is like no other place in the world!! We had heard that the roads were full of pot holes and immediately upon leaving the airport we found this to be true. There are no lines on the roads to divide the lanes and at time it seems to be a free-for-all! At one point a car was coming directly at us.
When we arrived at the camp we were greeted by the staff who had prepared some spinach soup and rolls to help tide us over for the night. The dining area is open to the outdoors and we were able to enjoy the nighttime sounds around us. The pathway to our cottage was lit by lanterns. We stayed in very rustic cottage with a thatched roof but it was extremely comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. Usually, the generator that supplies the electricity is turned off at 11:00 p.m. but it was left on so that we would have some light upon our arrival. The generator is only runs twice a day early morning and in the evening.
Don usually cannot hear for hours or sometimes a day or two after landing from a long flight. We are very pleased to say that on this trip after both landings that his hearing was completely clear. An answer to prayer!!
